Maruti Suzuki Alto, the entry-level small car of India’s largest carmaker, has crossed 38 lakh sales milestone in less than two decades since launch.

Introduced in India in 2000, the Alto crossed the 10 lakh sales mark in 2008. Twenty lakh units of the car were sold by 2012. The 30 lakh sales milestone was achieved in 2019, Maruti Suzuki said in a statement on Tuesday.

The Alto has been India's best-selling car for 15 consecutive years, the company said.

"Alto has been the preferred choice for entry car buyers due to several factors like its compact design, easy maneuverability, high fuel efficiency, updated safety features, etc., while maintaining the affordability," Shashank Srivastava, executive director (marketing and sales) at Maruti Suzuki India, said in the statement.

This year, the company introduced the BS-VI variant of the Alto, with a fuel efficiency of 22.05 km/litre, and added safety features such as airbags, anti-lock braking system (ABS) and electronic brake force distribution system (EBD), reverse parking sensors, speed alert system and seatbelt reminders.

Alto is currently available in a price range of Rs 2.89 lakh to Rs 4.09 lakh across variants.
