Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. has recorded an average download speed of 21.3 megabytes per second in August, making it the fastest 4G mobile broadband network in India, a report by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India showed on Tuesday.

Vodafone, however, maintained lead in terms of upload speed at 5.5 Mbps.

The download speed helps users access video online and messages received by them, among others, while upload speed helps users send photo, video and other documents to people online.

Bharti Airtel Ltd. followed Reliance Jio with an average download speed of 8.2 Mbps. Vodafone (7.7 Mbps) and Idea Cellular (6.1 Mbps) came in next. Idea Cellular had an upload speed of 5.1 Mbps speed, followed by Reliance Jio (4.4 Mbps) and Airtel (3.1 Mbps).

Though Vodafone and Idea have merged their mobile businesses, TRAI measures their performance separately as network integration is still not over.

State-owned firm Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd., which has been waiting for allocation of 4G spectrum from the government, led the chart in both 3G download and upload average speeds. BSNL recorded a 3G download speed of 2.6 Mbps and an upload speed of 1.2 Mbps.

The average speed is computed by TRAI based on the data it collects across India with the help of its MySpeed application on a real-time basis.
