IndiGo, which cancelled 49 flights today because of anticipated weather conditions and notices to airmen at various airports, will call off 30 flights daily for the rest of the month.

“All these (49) flights were cancelled with one to two days prior notice in order to re-accomodate passengers on flights at a similar time as booked,” the budget carrier operated by Interglobe Aviation Ltd. said on Wednesday. “This (cancellations) resulted in extended duty times which then made it necessary to re-roster our crew and optimise our operations.”

The airline will continue to curtail its flying schedule for the remainder of February by 30 flights a day to stabilise its operations and adjust its crew rosters due to the reasons cited earlier, it said. “Passengers are in the process of being informed and re-accommodated.”

As a proactive measure, IndiGo has decided to continue its curtailment until the end of March. This measure has already been implemented and passengers informed. These medium term cancellations have been made to minimise the impact on passengers as alternative travel options have been offered well in advance.

The 30 flights represent 2 percent of IndiGo’s total flights. The operations are expected to completely normalise by March 31, it said.

This comes after reports that a shortage of pilots has been impeding IndiGo’s operations, leading to cancellation of up to 30 flights on Tuesday. On Monday, too, the Gurugram-based airline had pulled out 32 flights from its network, PTI had reported citing an unnamed source.

The source alleged that IndiGo was forcing passengers to either buy last-minute fares or offering them alternate flights with one-stop connectivity with a long transit time.
