India’s Pharma Sales In November Grew At Fastest Pace In Past 32 Months

Pharma sales rose 14.5% year-on-year to Rs 12,624 crore, AIOCD AWACS data shows, rebounding from a two-year-low in October.

Domestic pharma sales in November grew at its fastest pace in the last 32 months with the onset of winter.

Pharma sales in November jumped 14.5 percent year-on-year to Rs 12,624 crore, as per data released by AIOCD Pharmasofttech AWACS Pvt. Ltd., a pharmaceutical market research firm. In October, growth in India’s pharma sales had slipped to a two-year-low of 5.1 percent.

Calling the bounce-back a “good sign of revival”, the research firm said it was led by a mix of volume, price and new product growth. Product pricing improved by 5.7 percent while volume growth and new product growth were the highest in nearly a year-and-a-half.

  • Acute segment, which accounts for 47 percent of the Indian pharma market, grew 8.9 percent.
  • Chronic segment, which accounts for 33 percent of the market, grew 11.7 percent.
  • Sub-Chronic segment, with 20 percent market share, grew 9 percent.
  • Among the top 50 companies, 80 percent firms reported double-digit growth.
  • Among the top 50 corporates, 48 registered growth in November.
  • Indian and foreign companies grew at 15.1 percent and 12.4 percent, respectively.

How Companies Fared

  • Among the top 10 companies, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd., Abbott India Ltd., Cadila Healthcare Ltd., Lupin Ltd., Mankind Pharma, Alkem Laboratories Ltd., Torrent Pharmaceuticals Ltd. and Intas Biopharmaceuticals Ltd. grew in double digits whereas Cipla Ltd. and GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals Ltd. clocked single-digit growth.
  • Macleods Pharmaceuticals Ltd. reported the highest growth followed by Mankind Pharma and Torrent Pharmaceuticals.
  • Among the next top 10 companies, Aristo Pharmaceuticals Pvt. Ltd. reported the highest growth followed by Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd. and Emcure Pharmaceuticals Ltd.
  • Boehringer Ingelheim grew the most among multinational drugmakers, at 52.3 percent, followed by Fresenius Kabi at 42 percent, Roche at 24.55 percent, Pfizer at 23.38 percent, Janssen at 23.36 percent, Eli Lilly at 21.18 percent and Sanofi India at 6.7 percent.
