India plans to set up an online building permission system by March next year for all 4,400 cities to improve ease of doing business.

The central government is in talks with the urban development departments of all states for speedy implementation of online building permission, Durga Shankar Mishra, secretary, Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs., said. As many as 2,056 cities or 14 states have implemented it so far, he said.

Five years ago, India ranked 186 on building construction permits. It has since leaped 159 places to rank 27 in 2019, Mishra said, highlighting the improvement.

The model tenancy law will also be implemented across states soon, giving a boost to rental housing, Mishra said in a webinar organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry in association with Savills India. The law is aimed at reducing conflict between landlords and tenants to boost rental housing.
