In Charts: These Are The Most Innovative States Of India 

Delhi and Karnataka were ranked the most innovative of all Indian states and union territories, in an index by the Niti Aayog

Delhi is India's most innovative state; Karnataka follows.

All Indian states scored 23.4 on an average out of a score of 100, according to the India Innovation Index compiled by NITI Aayog. The index measures parameters including human capital, investment, business environment, safety, legal environment, knowledge diffusion, and output among others.

Delhi scored 46.6, while Karnataka and Maharashtra got 42.5 and 38, respectively.

By patent applications filed, an indicator of knowledge output, Delhi leads among major states and union territories, filing 7.9 patents per lakh of population.

Karnataka has the highest number of registered geographical indications in a state, while Delhi ranked among the lowest in this category.

Delhi has the highest 0.02 startups for every crore of the state gross domestic product, while most other major states have 0.01.

Telangana leads on knowledge-intensive services. 17.5% of the state's total population is employed in in aerospace vehicles and defence, biopharmaceutical, medical devices, information technology and analytical instruments, video production and distribution and production technology, and heavy machinery.

Delhi has the most internet subscribers--202.7 users per 100 population. No other state or union territory comes anywhere close.

India ranked 48 on the Global Innovation Index out of 131 countries in 2020, spending 0.7% of it’s GDP on research and development, according to the report.
