Ikea May Open Smaller Format Stores In India

Swedish furniture retailer Ikea, which will open its first store in Hyderabad next month, is keen on smaller-format stores as it plans to be present at city centres.

The stores are expected to be as big as 15,000-30,000 sq ft, unlike its normal store format of around 400,000 sq ft.

“We'd like to be able to reach people in different ways,” Patrik Antoni, deputy country manager at Ikea India, told BloombergQuint on the side-lines of Retail Technology Conclave in Mumbai today.

The furniture retailer is expected to launch its second Indian store in Mumbai and its e-commerce venture in 2019.

Ikea will also Indianise its offerings and Indian cuisine will comprise half of the food served at Ikea restaurants, including dishes like biryani, dal makhani and samosas.
