Bob Corker, a former U.S. senator from Tennessee who took himself out of consideration as President Donald Trump’s running mate in 2016, is joining investment bank Jefferies Financial Group Inc. as a special adviser.

“I see a tremendous opportunity to utilize both my business background and the experience I’ve had over the past 12 years to impact the growth trajectory at Jefferies,” Corker, 68, said in an interview.

Corker founded a construction company Bencor, which he sold in 1990. He has invested in real estate as well as in Tennessee-based companies such as One-to-One Health, a corporate heath-care provider of which he is chairman.

“Given that I’ve been a founder, I hope to be relatable to other founders that are working with Jefferies and making what might be the most important business decision in their lives,” said Corker.

Jefferies Chief Executive Officer Rich Handler described Corker as a “highly capable entrepreneur, business builder, philanthropist and leader” in an emailed statement.

“We will lean on Bob for his business acumen, insights and help in continuing to build and position Jefferies, and to partner and assist his vast array of long-term relationships and friends whenever needed,” Handler said.

A resident of Chattanooga, Tennessee, Corker has held posts including chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and was a member of the Senate Banking Committee. He left office in 2019 and was succeeded by Marsha Blackburn.
