Fake Eyelashes With North Korea Connection Reap $1 Million Fine

(Bloomberg) -- False eyelashes allegedly made with North Korean materials landed a California company in trouble with the U.S. Treasury Department.

Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control said in an announcement Thursday that it has settled with Elf Beauty, Inc. of Oakland for potentially violating U.S. sanctions on North Korea.

The drugstore makeup company imported false eyelash kits from two suppliers in China that contained materials from North Korea, in violation of North Korea Sanctions Regulations, according to the statement.

Elf agreed to pay $996,800 after the Treasury office found the company voluntarily disclosed the apparent violations and that they were “non-egregious.”
