Facebook Inc. named Nicola Mendelsohn vice president of its global business group, filling a key advertising role that was vacated by Carolyn Everson earlier this year.

Mendelsohn, who had served in the job on an interim basis since June, will now take the post permanently, the social-networking giant said in a statement Wednesday. The executive, who joined Facebook in 2013, previously worked as the company’s vice president for Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Mendelsohn is tasked with building ties with Facebook advertisers at a time of unprecedented scrutiny. The company has faced boycotts over its handling of hate speech, and a whistle-blower recently shared thousands of internal documents with regulators and the Wall Street Journal. The documents detailed Facebook’s struggle with moderating its content and the mental-health impact of its photo-sharing app Instagram.

In taking the job, Mendelsohn said she saw Facebook’s platforms as “a force for good.”

“I see our mission play out in innumerable ways every day,” she said in the statement.

Mendelsohn, 50, previously served at BBH, Grey and Karmarama, and was the first woman president of the ad trade group IPA.
