Core Industries Contract The Most In Six Months

All eight core industries contracted in February 2021.

India’s core sectors contracted again after two months, and at the sharpest pace since August.

The index of eight core industries contracted 4.6% in February compared with a revised growth of 0.9% in January 2021, according to data released by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry on Wednesday.

Internals

  • Coal production declined 4.4% in February 2021 compared with a drop of 1.9% in January 2021.

  • Crude oil production declined 3.2% compared with a fall of 4.6% in the preceding month.

  • Natural gas production declined 1% after a decline of 2% in January.

  • Production of refinery products fell 10.9% in February after a contraction of 2.6% in the preceding month.

  • Fertilisers production contracted 3.7% after a fall of 2.7% in January 2021.

  • Steel production fell 1.8% compared with a growth of 6.2%.

  • Cement production dropped 5.5% in February after declining 5.8% in January.

  • Electricity generation declined 0.2% after growing 5.5% in January 2021.
