Chinese Oil Trading Giant Tells London Employees to Work at Home

Chinese oil trading giant Unipec told its London staff to work from home after an employee fell ill with virus-like symptoms, according to people familiar with the matter.
Details of the person’s condition, and whether they’re being tested for coronavirus, weren’t immediately known. Unipec buys crude for China Petroleum & Chemical Corp, or Sinopec, China’s largest oil-refining business.
The vast majority of coronavirus tests that have been conducted so far in the U.K. have been negative. Last week, Chevron Corp. asked employees in London to work from home while it tested a staff member who was unwell. That person was subsequently found not to have the virus. The tally of cases in the U.K. stood at 33 on Sunday.
Unipec U.K. Co. is based in Shepherd’s Bush in West London. The company had an average of 73 staff in 2018 including 11 traders, a Companies House filing shows.
Sinopec didn’t immmediately respond to an emailed request for comment.
