Chicken Biryani, Samosa Most-Binged Foods Of 2021, Says Swiggy

Biryani was the most-ordered dish in Chennai, Kolkata, Lucknow and Hyderabad.

Indians love their biryani. So much so that they order it 115 times every minute.

Chicken biryani ruled for the sixth straight year in 2021, according to Swiggy’s annual report based on orders received in 500 cities. It's also the most common first dish ordered on the food delivery app - more than 4.25 lakh new users ordered it on the platform.

It was the most-ordered dish in Chennai, Kolkata, Lucknow and Hyderabad.

But Mumbai loves dal khichdi more. In fact, chicken fried rice, masala dosa and garlic breadsticks rank higher than biryani.

Gurugram also doesn't order biryani much, with dal makhani and masala dosa among the top-ordered items. Lucknow is another north Indian city that likes masala dosa.

Mutton biryani and steamed momos rank among the most-ordered food in Kolkata.

Snacks And Sweets

Samosas were the most-binged snack, with orders for 50 lakh samosas placed on Swiggy. That's one each for every New Zealander.

Pav-bhaji was India’s second-favourite snack with 21 lakh orders.

Gulab jamun, with over 21 lakh orders, beat rasmalai to the most-liked dessert.

India eats the healthiest on Mondays and Thursdays, and keto orders rose 23%. There was an 83% surge in vegan and plant-based food orders this year. Bengaluru is the most health-conscious city, followed by Hyderabad and Mumbai.

Instamart, Swiggy's quick grocery service, delivered 2.8 crore packs of fruits and vegetables with tomatoes, bananas, onions, potatoes, and green chilies making it to the top five fruits and vegetables, it said.

This year on Swiggy, Indians ordered enough tomatoes to play the Tomatina festival in Spain for 11 years. Did someone say inflation?

Pet food was the top most-ferried item by Swiggy's pick-up and drop service 'Genie'. And the delivery of medicines grew 288.79% during the pandemic.

  • Top Cuisines: After Indian, pan-Asian and Chinese were among the top three cuisines ordered, followed by Mexican and Korean.

  • Dinner Time: Most orders received between 7 and 9 p.m.

  • Night Binging: Cheese-garlic bread, popcorn, and French fries were ordered the most after 10 p.m.

  • Going Any Length For Food: A delivery partner travelled 55.5 kilometres, the maximum for Swiggy, to deliver a food package in Bengaluru.

  • Craving Wafers: Chips were the top ordered item post 10 p.m. on Instamart.

  • One lakh masks and over 4 lakh soaps and handwashes ordered online.

  • A Swiggy Genie partner from Bangalore travelled 42 km to deliver an Oxygen flowmeter.
