Blueberry Boom Shows Peru Growers Escape Political Upheaval

(Bloomberg) -- Lovers of superfoods like blueberries and avocados will be pleased to know that politics aren’t getting in the way of bumper crops in one of the world’s biggest exporters. At least not yet.

In a welcome relief to stretched supply chains and food inflation, Peru just reported a 120% surge in blueberry exports for September versus the same month of 2019. The result was also well ahead of 2020 exports, which grew but were restrained by strict Covid-19 lockdowns.

Fruit export growth in Peru is outpacing regional rivals despite political upheaval and social protests that have disrupted the local mining industry. So far, leftist President Pedro Castillo has kept free trade agreements that underpin exports in place. But the sector is wary that efforts to restrict food imports will trigger reprisals.

Peru is consolidating its position as the biggest shipper of blueberries. It’s also increasing its participation in the fresh avocado market thanks to an 86% jump in shipments over pre-pandemic levels. The antioxidants in blueberries and the healthy fat in avocados have made them popular items among health-conscious consumers worldwide.

Investments over the last several years mean Peruvian fruit exports will continue to grow, albeit at a slower rate, said Gabriel Amaro, head of agricultural association AGAP.
