We’ve noticed that because of climate change recently, every time we hear about these disasters due to climate change, I think in that kind of a situation, we need to focus on disaster-resistant infrastructure. I think that this is going to become a very big market, it’s going to contribute to very large economic activity.

Even if the is moving towards automation, there are possibilities of new job creation. We have to visualise those jobs and update our syllabi according to that is what we are doing.

India’s biggest advantage is that we have young talent. We want to develop human resources. Soon the focus will move from your degrees to your skills. Your ability will become important. That’s why in India, in every level, we are focussing on skill development keeping in mind the needs of a global workforce.   

We are in an interdependent era. We have to go ahead with global benchmarking. So my first job is to link our laws, rules and governance to a global benchmark. So that even the world finds it easy (to invest) and there is trust. We are making initiatives for that. 

It is true that the third largest coal reserve is in India. We cannot ignore that in a poor country like India. But there is a solution. One is changing processes for mining coal so that there’s not environmental loss due to it. The other solution is coal gasification. Through this you can develop clean energy. We are inviting the world to bring this technology to India and do coal gasification.

To do this we have taken policy initiatives and given incentives. We still face a challenge for nuclear energy. Since we are not a member, we don’t get the supply of fuel. If we can resolve that then India will be a model in the world towards energy. Another issue linked with climate change is water. We are doing the Jal Jeevan Mission. We are focussing on rain water harvesting and reuse. We want to replenish our rivers.

Climate change is the issue that concerns the world most. India’s lifestyle is an example for the world. We believe that Earth is our mother and we don’t have any right to exploit it. We only have the right to milk it. In India, there’s only need, no greed. 

Aadhaar has improved targeted service delivery, transparency and plugged leakages.

The investment our government is making towards infrastructure development, it has never been done before. Almost Rs 100 lakh crore will be spent on advanced infrastructure in the coming years.

This is just the beginning. A lot is yet to come. This is a golden opportunity for global businesses to be associated with us. Today, India is in a unique position. If you want to invest in a market where there is scale, come to India.

India’s economic growth is one of the great success stories of the century. I’ve gotten to see that growth first hand. 

If we’re going to avoid the worst impact of climate change we have to move entirely off fossil fuels and to an economy powered by clean energy.
