Auto Sales: Hero MotoCorp Sales Up 13%; TVS Motor Gains After Sales Rise

Hero MotoCorp Ltd.’s sales in June rose 13 percent over the year-ago month to 7.04 lakh units, according to its exchange filing.

“With monsoon already hitting many parts of the country, the positive consumption pattern is expected to continue in the coming months,” the country’s largest two-wheeler maker said.

The company also created a global benchmark by clocking over 2.1 million unit sales in the first quarter of the current fiscal. The automaker consequently raised the prices of its motorcycles and scooters with immediate effect, the release added.

TVS Motor Company Ltd. sold 3.13 lakh units in June, an increase of 15 percent from the year-ago month, according to its exchange filing.

Key sales highlights:

• Two-wheeler sales rose 12.1 percent year-on-year to 3.01 lakh units.
• Scooter sales rose 13.6 percent year-on-year to 1.02 lakh units.
• Motorcycles sales rose 14.9 percent year-on-year to 1.28 lakh units.
• Three-wheeler sales jumped 140.9 percent year-on-year to 12,413 units.
• Exports rose 48.6 percent year-on-year to 65,971 units.

Shares of TVS Motor rose as much as 3.3 percent to Rs 571 apiece after the results announcement.

Ashok Leyland Ltd. sold 15,791 units last month, an increase of 28 percent from June 2017, according to its stock exchange notification.

Key sales highlights:

• Sales of medium and heavy commercial vehicles rose 22 percent year-on-year to 11,257 units.
• Sales of light commercial vehicles rose 45 percent year-on-year to 4,534 units.

Escorts Ltd. sold 9,983 tractors in June, an increase of 72.8 percent from the year-ago period, according to its stock exchange filing.

Key sales highlights:

• Domestic sales rose 72.1 percent year-on-year to 9,758 units.
• Exports rose 110.3 percent to 225 units.

Bajaj Auto Ltd.'s sales rose for the eleventh straight month in June, registering its best monthly sales growth in over eight years.

The two- and three-wheeler maker sold 4.04 lakh units last month, an increase of 65 percent from the year-ago period, the Pune-based company said in a regulatory filing today. Prior to this, the company clocked sales growth of 101 percent year-on-year in January 2010.

Segment-wise sales highlights:

• Motorcycles sales rose 65 percent year-on-year to 3.37 lakh units.
• Commercial vehicles rose 66 percent year-on-year to 66,677 units, registering its highest ever monthly sales.
• Exports rose 44 percent year-on-year to 1.69 lakh units.

Eicher Motors Ltd., the maker of Royal Enfield motorcycles, saw an 18 percent rise in sales in June on the back of its lower capacity engine bikes.

The company sold a total of 74,477 bikes, according to the company’s exchange filing. Sale of models with engine capacity exceeding 350cc rose 29 percent to 5,708 units, while the sale of those below 350cc rose 17 percent to 68,769 units.

Exports rose 27 percent to 1,889 units, the release showed.

Tata Motors Ltd.' overall sales jumped 50 percent last month, with domestic sales increasing by more than half to 56,773 units. Exports also rose 50 percent to 5,246 units year-on-year, according to the exchange filing.

This was largely due to a low-base effect after the Supreme Court ruling on the switch to Bharat Stage-IV vehicles affected sales in June 2017, the company said.

“This year, the continued growth in June 2018 is on the back of the economy showing an uptick due to the improved industrial activity, robust demand in private consumption and government spending on infrastructure,” the company said.

• Commercial Vehicles sales grew 50 percent to 38,560 units.
• Sales under the medium and heavy vehicle segment grew 50 percent to 11,524 units.
• Sales under the light commercial vehicles segment rose 69 percent to 4,485 units.
• The SCV Cargo and Pickup segment sales grew 53 percent to 16,857 units.
• The commercial passenger carrier segment grew 33 percent with sales at 5,732 units.
• Domestic sales of passenger vehicles grew 63 percent to 18,213 units.

Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd.'s sales rose 26 percent in June, compared to the year-ago period, selling 45,155 units.

This can be attributed to a 12 percent rise in passenger vehicles to 18,137 units and a 27 percent rise in commercial vehicles to 19,229 units, according to the company’s exchange filing.

Sales under the medium and heavy commercial vehicles segment jumped 58 percent to 1,108 units.

But the largest improvement was seen in exports where 3,466 vehicles were shipped, 87 percent higher than those sent in June 2017.

The monthly sales figures compare to a 4 percent fall in overall sales in June 2017 when vehicle sales took a hit due to the implementation of the GST.

The company’s farm equipment sales rose 22 percent on a yearly basis last month after it sold 33,093 during the period.

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd.'s sales jumped 36.3 percent in June, compared to the year-ago period, led by its compact vehicles such as Swift, Dzire, Clerio, Baleno and others.

“This includes 1.35 lakh units in the domestic market and 9,319 units of exports,” India’s largest passenger car maker said in a notification to the exchanges.

Its passenger cars segment saw a 46.5 percent rise to 1.02 lakh units in sales, while sale of utility vehicles rose 39.2 percent to 19,321 units.

Total domestic sales improved by 45.5 percent to 1.35 lakh units. Export, at the same time, fell 29 percent to 9,319 units.
