Two years after launching its highest-selling car Tiago, Tata Motors Ltd. today rolled out its first derivative named Tiago NRG.

The cross-hatchback variant’s petrol version costs Rs 5.49 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), while the diesel variant is priced at Rs 6.31 lakh. The car has SUV-like features, touch-screen infotainment and is meant for tougher roads, Tata Motors said.

“We have made sure that before the festive season, we launch four new products,” Mayank Pareek, head of passenger vehicle business unit at Tata Motors, said in Mumbai. The company’s passenger vehicle segment is expected to perform better than the market in the ongoing financial year, he said.

The launch, Pareek said, is part of the company’s “turnaround 2.0” strategy, which aims at improving the passenger vehicles segment through sales enhancement, cost cuts and better operating efficiencies.

The company doesn’t see any reduction in its sales during the festive season despite Kerala floods, rising fuel prices and a weakening rupee. “We haven’t been impacted by it,” said Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Guenter Butschek. The carmaker, he said, expects to continue its growth trajectory triggered by the festive season and additional launches.

Tata Motors’ latest launch will compete with the likes of Honda WR-V, the Hyundai i20 Active and small cross-hatchback Maruti Suzuki Celerio X. Tiago NRG, however, is costlier than the Celerio X, which is priced in the range of Rs 4.2-5.6 lakh.
