Tata Motors Ltd. rolled out the first electric batch of its compact sedan Tigor today from its Sanand facility in Gujarat, for an order placed by Energy Efficiency Services Ltd.

The first lot of e-Tigors are are part of EESL’s tender floated for 10,000 electric sedans. Tata Motors had won the bid for the first 350 orders. The new vehicles were flagged off by Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran, group patriarch Ratan Tata and the company’s chief Guenter Butschek.

“As we work together to build the future of e-mobility, I am confident that our customers will respond very favourably to this electric model,” Chandrasekaran said in an emailed media statement.

The government is planning to have only electric cars by 2030 as it attempts reduce both oil imports and carbon emissions to a significant extent.

The third largest passenger carmaker had become the number one bidder amid stiff competition. The other bidder, Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd., quoted a price that was Rs 2.3 lakh above Tata’s and was initially out of the race. However, later Mahindra was given the option to match Tata Motors’ price and then chose to sell 150 electric variants of Verito to EESL. Mahindra has already supplied some of them.

The EESL order first mandated supply to be completed before Nov. 30 but was postponed to December-end. In the first phase, Tata Motors is required to deliver 250 Tigor electric vehicles, for which it has received a letter of agreement. For the remaining 100 cars, the agreement is expected to be issued shortly by EESL, the company said.

With e-Tigor, we have begun our journey in boosting e-mobility and offering a full range of e-vehicles to customers. This tender has effectively paved the way for connecting our aspirations in the e-mobility space with the vision of government
