Tata Motors Ltd. launched its first compact sports utility vehicle, the Nexon, on September 21. Available in petrol and diesel variants, the car is priced between Rs 5.85 lakh to Rs 9.45 lakh ex-showroom New Delhi.

It will compete with the segment leaders – Maruti Suzuki’s Vitara Brezza and Ford Motor’s EcoSport. The Nexon is priced at least Rs 1.5 lakh lower than its two other competitors in the market. Prices of the Brezza diesel start from Rs 7.27 lakh. It doesn’t have a petrol variant.

This launch is the main driver for our growth in passenger vehicles, said Guenter Butschek, chief executive officer of Tata Motors

Powered with a 1.5L turbocharged Revotorq engine, Nexon is one of the most powerful among the existing compact SUVs in India. The car, designed in a sporty coupe style, offers a mileage of 17 kmpl. It is the fourth product launched under the ‘IMPACT’ (improvement through action) project.

To protect margins, we have taken up 18 big IMPACT projects, which focus on cost reduction, said Pareek. We as promised earlier, will also venture into segments such as large sedans, premium hatchbacks and large SUVs going forward, he said.
