The income tax department extended the date for filing income tax returns for financial year 2016-17 to August 5 due to difficulties faced by taxpayers while filing returns on its e-filing website.

The taxman also allowed linking Aadhaar with the permanent account number till August 31, it said in a notification on Monday.

There were some complaints that taxpayers were not being able to log on to the e-filing website of the income tax department, or were not able to link Aadhaar with PAN, the department said in the notification. The deadline for filing income tax returns and linking Aadhaar with PAN was scheduled to expire on Monday, July 31.

"While technical snags have been removed already, the main reason for failure of people to log in is because of last minute rush and panic in which those who have already logged in want to continue for the entire period for fear of losing it," the income tax department said.

While Aadhaar-PAN linkage can be done till August 31, 2017, returns will not be processed until Aadhaar is linked, the taxman added.
