Online marketplace Paytm Mall will be hiring 2,000 people as it looks to strengthen its technology and scale up operations to take on bigger players like Amazon.in and Flipkart Ltd. in the Indian e-commerce space.

The new staff will be hired across various business and technology divisions, Paytm Mall said in a statement.

Paytm Mall has also absorbed over 800 people from its parent company One97 Communications Ltd. The e-commerce vertical which raised $200 million from SAIF Partners and Alibaba Group Holdings also roped in former Alibaba.com director Bhushan Patil who joined Paytm last year, to handle logistics. Sunil Goyal, who had joined Paytm after his startup Near.in was acquired by the company will handle product and technology for Paytm Mall.

Amit Sinha, was appointed as the chief operating officer of Paytm Mall last month.

The firm is also scaling up its partner network by adding another 3,000 Paytm Agents to its existing workforce as it goes deeper into tier II and tier III cities, digitising catalogues of neighbourhood shopkeepers and brands.

Paytm had last year de-merged its e-commerce business into a separate entity by the name of Paytm Mall to capture the online retail opportunity.

In February it also launched a separate app and website for its online marketplace business, which has over 17 fulfillment centers across the country.
