Carnegie India’s Global Technology Summit Lays Roadmaps For Global Meets Local

Carnegie India’s Global Technology Summit—co-hosted with the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India—convened leading policymakers, entrepreneurs, industry leaders, academics, and technologists from around the world to deliberate over three days on the theme ‘Global Meets Local’. The summit ran from December 14-16, 2021 and had three comprehensive sub-themes for each day of the summit: The Future of Technology: Resilience and Partnerships, Technology & Innovation: Roadmap to Sustainability and Inclusion, and Glocalizing Emerging Technologies: Building Digital Capabilities.

This year, the GTS was organized in a hybrid format. While a few sessions were held physically, others were held on a custom-built, interactive website. The website saw over 25k users and 4.5k registrations from all over India and the world.

With several substantive and timely discussions from experts and practitioners from government and industry, the summit was widely covered by over 75 publications. On the first day, Boris Johnson—prime minister of the United Kingdom—highlighted the fact that India and the UK are natural partners. Emphasizing the growing importance of a global marketplace, S. Jaishankar—external affairs minister of India—said, "Historically all countries have seen the world as a global marketplace...With the passage of time, the importance of the global marketplace has also increased." Talking about cryptocurrencies, Meenakashi Lekhi—minister of state for external affairs and culture—stated that "if cryptocurrency is going to be used to launch cyber-attacks in India, to launch other attacks on India, to do other kinds of illegal and unethical work like drug trafficking, I need to stop all that." The list of notable speakers from government includes ministers like S. Jaishankar, Rajkumar Ranjan Singh, V. Muraleedharan, Dharmendra Pradhan, Cedric O., Nguyen Huy Dung, amongst others.

To name a few from industry, Nivruti Rai of Intel, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw of Biocon, Ajit Mohan of Meta, Akhil Gupta of Bharti Enterprises, Melinda Claybaugh of Facebook, Victoria Grand and Abhijit Bose of WhatsApp, and Christian Klein and Sindhu Gangadharan of SAP, contributed to the discussions.

Participants keenly discussed issues such as the ‘Geopolitics of Technology’, ‘AUKUS: The Future of Non-Proliferation’, ‘Investing in Technology’, ‘Securing Vaccine Supply Chains’, ‘UPI or the Unified Payments Interface’, ‘Building an AI Nation’, ‘Building Data Protection Authorities’, ‘Building a Technology Innovation Hub: Lessons From Karnataka’, ‘Cryptocurrencies’, ‘The Future of Fintech in India’, ‘Reaching a Trillion Dollar Digital Economy’, ‘Global Retail Supply Chains’, ‘Future of Encryption’, and many more.
