Germany’s RWE Fires Up a Solar Farm in Texas Oil Country

(Bloomberg) --

RWE AG, a German utility, completed construction of a 100-megawatt solar farm in heart of the West Texas oil patch.

The facility, southwest of Midland-Odessa in the Permian Basin, has a long-term contract with SK E&S Co., a South Korean natural-gas and renewable-power company. It’s RWE’s first solar project in Texas, the company said in a statement Monday.

Booming oil and gas production in the Permian has sent demand for electricity surging, and solar has become one of the cheapest sources of power in the region. RWE has a pipeline of more than 10 gigawatts of renewable energy in the U.S.
