Nirmal Bang Report

Nationwide lockdown was imposed by the Indian government from March 25, 2020 to May 31, 2020, post which certain economic activities were permitted to commence in a phased manner.

Hotels received central government’s nod to begin operations from June 08, 2020. However, there were many difficulties in the smooth operations post that which included -

  1. The opening up of hotels was not uniform across states in India, thus leaving too many unanswered questions among people regarding domestic travel.

  2. During July, while some states continued to utilize hotels as Covid-19 quarantine centers, certain states allowed hotel operations to begin but with restricted capacity utilization.

  3. Also, certain state governments’ decision to extend the lockdown, rules like requirement of e-pass for domestic travel and insecurity among people regarding inter-state travel kept domestic tourism subdued in Q2 FY21.

  4. The emergence of digital meeting platforms restricted corporate travel even post lifting of the lockdown.
