Motilal Oswal: India’s Active Telecom Subscriber Base Drops Again Post Limited Recovery In May

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s subscriber data for June 2020 indicates that active subscriber base of telcos has declined again after the limited recovery witnessed in May 2020.

It remains to be seen whether the number of subscribers would return to the previous level with the opening up of the economy or it would permanently decline by 3% from the pre Covid-19 level.

Gross subscribers shrunk by 3.2 million month on month to 1.14 billion in June 2020 (versus 5.6 million loss in May 2020).

Industry added healthy 14 million mobile broadband subscribers (versus 7.3 million in May 2020) to 678 million.

MBB subscribers now account for 70.8% (up 170 basis point month on month) of active subscribers.
