The initial public offering market has been robust this year which is the hallmark of optimism. Companies have raised funds with high premia, and this has been in parallel to the secondary market boom which witnessed the Sensex crossing the 60,000 mark.
This is a precursor to the big bang IPO of Life Insurance Corporation of India which is to happen in the last quarter. Rs 1 lakh crore is to be raised from this issue which will be almost equivalent to the total amount raised in 2021 so far. Therefore, this will be a game changer in case it happens.
It also needs to be seen whether the full amount will be raised as an IPO or whether there would be strategic investors involved which will depend on the absorptive capacity of the market.
While a strategic disinvestment is unlikely as it has been spoken of as an IPO there could be certain large investors already committed to this issue which would make the quantum left for the public to be substantially lower.
