In CY21, the Nifty recorded an impressive 24% YoY gain despite severe Covid-19 related challenges. CY21 was a year of heightened activity on multiple fronts. The index rallied strongly (up 26% YoY) until Q3 CY21 driven by the decline in Covid-19 cases, a significant pick up in the pace of vaccination, and the consequent sharp revival in economic activity.
However, the detection of Omicron (a new variant) in South Africa and its gradual spread to several other nations coupled with the possibility of interest rate hikes ahead led to a 1.5% QoQ decline in Nifty in Q4 CY21.
Foreign institutional investors inflows decelerated to $3.8 billion. However, domestic institutional investors bounced back with $12.1 billion inflows after recording outflows in CY20.
In CY21, mid-caps were up 46%. Over the last five years, the mid-cap index has outperformed the Nifty by 5%.
