In the first fortnight of December 2021, mobility continued to improve, except for workplace mobility, which moderated from the previous fortnight. The number of active Covid-19 cases also dipped by over 12% from the previous fortnight, although there was a spike in the number of deaths (up by 34%).
The pace of vaccination also continued to accelerate, with ~62% of the total population having received both doses and ~41% having received at least one dose.
However, urban unemployment has been on the rise over the past two fortnights and stood at 9% while rural unemployment rose modestly to 6.7%. Reverse migration during the festive season has led to a rise in urban unemployment.
Additional disbursal of grants of ~Rs 220 billion under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme is supporting rural employment in the short term.
