ICICI Securities Report
The passing of Farm Bills, 2020 by the India government recently is likely to increase the availability of buyers for farmers’ produce, by allowing them to trade freely without any license or stock limit to aid further price discovery.
This breaks the stranglehold by the mandi over the farm procurement and opens up new selling options to farmers.
We believe in the long term, this will aid in developing the futures and forward market of perishables and lead to an increase in demand for cold storage infrastructure.
We believe cold storage equipment market in India should be approximately Rs 8 billion, where Blue Star Ltd. is the market leader followed by Western India.
Given the leadership in cold storages, Blue Star may benefit from the implementation of these policies, while Voltas Ltd., which is currently not in cold storage, can look at a potential opportunity.
We believe near-term impact will be nominal unless food processing takes off in a big way and retail is modernised.
