Vote Leave, which campaigned for Brexit in the 2016 referendum, has been fined for breaking electoral law, the Electoral Commission said.

The watchdog has referred the case to the Metropolitan Police, it said in a statement. The group broke spending limits by coordinating with another group, known as BeLeave.

"We found substantial evidence that the two groups worked to a common plan, did not declare their joint working and did not adhere to the legal spending limits," the Commission said. "These are serious breaches of the laws put in place by Parliament to ensure fairness and transparency at elections and referendums."

Vote Leave has denied wrongdoing.
