Trump Says Pat Cipollone to Be His Next White House Counsel

(Bloomberg) -- President Donald Trump said he will name Washington attorney Pat Cipollone as his next White House counsel.

Trump told the Associated Press in an interview on Tuesday that Cipollone will replace departing White House counsel Don McGahn. Cipollone is a partner at the Washington law firm Stein Mitchell Cipollone Beato & Missner. He worked at the Justice Department during the George H. W. Bush administration.

Trump told reporters at the White House on Saturday that Cipollone is “a great guy” but said at the time he hadn’t made a final decision on filling the post.

McGahn has had a tumultuous tenure at the White House, marked by questions over his handling of security clearances and his involvement as a key figure in investigations into Russian election interference. McGahn was expected to depart the administration following the Senate’s confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

Trump has also considered former Special Counsel Emmet Flood and former Fannie Mae general counsel Brian Brooks to succeed McGahn, according to reports in recent months.
