Trump Identifies Remains of Two U.S. Soldiers Returned by North Korea

(Bloomberg) -- President Donald Trump said on Twitter that the U.S. had identified the remains of two Army soldiers returned from North Korea, and credited his June summit with the country’s leader Kim Jong Un.

North Korea returned the remains of about 55 Americans killed in the 1950-1953 Korea War following Trump and Kim’s summit in Singapore, a concession as the two countries negotiate Pyongyang’s abandonment of its nuclear weapons.

About 5,300 Americans never returned from North Korea after the war. The remains Kim returned represent about a quarter of those the Defense Department believes are still held by the regime in Pyongyang.

Attaching names to the remains is a slow process. About 850 sets of Korean War remains previously recovered by the U.S. are still unidentified, angering families who lost relatives in the war.
