Ted Cruz Defeats Beto O’Rourke in Texas Senate Election

O’Rourke used an engaging personal style, grassroots fundraising and unconventional videos to raise more money than Cruz.

(Bloomberg) -- Republican Texas Senator Ted Cruz won a second term, defeating a spirited and high-profile challenge from progressive Democratic House member Beto O’Rourke, according to ABC and NBC projections.

Cruz, a 2016 presidential candidate, was aided against O’Rourke’s unexpectedly strong challenge with a rally in Houston by President Donald Trump despite the antagonistic history between the senator and the president.

O’Rourke, from El Paso, used an engaging personal style, prodigious grassroots fundraising and unconventional videos to raise more money than Cruz and to fashion himself into a political celebrity in Texas and across the U.S.
