Addressing women students at the Stella Maris College in Chennai on Wednesday, 13 March, Congress President Rahul Gandhi said that the law must apply to everybody, and not selectively. When asked about his brother-in-law Robert Vadra, Gandhi said that he will be the first to ask for an investigation, but the authorities should also investigate Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the Rafale deal.

Gandhi spoke to the students about a gamut of issues ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Here are the ten things he said:

  • Speaking to students, Gandhi said, “You can't have a negative, fearful atmosphere in the country and expect economic growth, which is directly related to the mood of the country.”
  • Congress will change the mood of country, make people feel happy and empowered, the Congress president added.
  • Gandhi raked up the issue of Rafale deal and said that the prime minister has not said anything about it. Levelling allegations of corruption against Modi, he said that the PM has given Rs 30,000 crore to Anil Ambani.
  • Responding to a question about his brother-in-law Robert Vadra, Gandhi said that he will be the first to ask for an investigation but investigate the prime minister too. “Law must apply to everybody, not be applied selectively.”
  • Gandhi also spoke about representation of women in leadership roles and said that the party will pass the women's reservation bill it if it comes to power.
  • “You cannot have women in power in India until attitude towards them changes,” Gandhi said.

  • In response to a question, Gandhi said he had learnt the lessons of humility and love from his mother and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi.
  • On the issue of demonetisation, he asked the gathering if they liked the move, to which the audience replied “no”.
  • “I think it’s pretty clear the damage demonetisation did. PM should have taken your advice,” the Congress president added.
  • Gandhi, who asked the students to challenge him and “make him uncomfortable,” also questioned whether the prime minister could stand before a large audience and answer questions.
