Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm Tauktae Live: Cyclone Starts Landfall Near Diu, Rains In Mumbai May Reduce

Cyclone Tauktae has started making landfall near Gujarat and is expected to cross the Saurashtra coasts to the east of Diu within the next three hours, India's meterological department said.

The extremely severe cyclonic storm's centre is 35 kilometres east of Diu in Gujarat, it said. Wind speeds of up to 133 kilometres per hour were recorded in Diu as of 9:30 p.m., the IMD said.

According to private weather agency Skymet, the cyclone made landfall with wind speeds of up to 150 kilometres per hour. The agency also said that rain intensity and winds are likely to reduce over Mumbai and suburbs.

Earlier in the day, an orange alert was declared in Mumbai and a red alert was sounded in the adjoining Raigad district. The cyclone also forced Mumbai airport to suspend operations since 11 a.m. Monorail operations have been suspended for the day.

Maharashtra Chief Minister's Office, in a statement, said that six have been killed while nine have been injured due to the cyclone.

Almost two dozen ports on India's west coast from Goa to Gujarat are put on high alert. About 65 teams from the disaster response force have been deployed in several states, including Gujarat, Maharashtra, Kerala and Karnataka.

IMD said several places in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Rajasthan are expected to receive “extremely heavy” rainfall until Tuesday. Waves of as much as 3 meters above normal tides are likely to inundate some coastal areas.

Six Killed, Nine Injured In Maharashtra

Six people have been killed and nine others injured due to Cyclone Tauktae in Maharashtra, according to the state Disaster Management Department.

12,500 people have been evacuated, the chief minister's office said in a press release. 2,542 houses have partially collapsed and six houses have completely collapsed.

IMD Forecasts Extremely Heavy Rains In Mumbai For Next Few Hours

The India Meteorological Department upgraded its cyclone warning for Mumbai.

The city could see "extremely heavy" rainfall in the next few hours, with gusty winds reaching up to 120 kilometers per hour, according to the IMD's 2 p.m. update.

Earlier in the day, the met department had forecast "moderate to intense" spells of rain in Mumbai and neighbouring districts with gusty winds reaching 90-100 kilometers per hour.

Meanwhile, Mumbai is scheduled to see high tide at 3.44 p.m, and tidal waves will be up to 3.94 metres high, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said.

Mumbai Airport Extends Shutdown

Flight operations at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport will remain suspended till 8 p.m. today, ANI reported.

Earlier, the Mumbai International Airport Ltd. had announced a suspension of operations from 11 a.m. till 2 p.m. in view of the cyclone alert.

Mumbai Airport To Shut Operations Between 11 A.M.-2 P.M.

IMD Forecasts Moderate-To-Intense Rain In Maharashtra

Moderate to intense spells of rain with gusty winds reaching 90-100 kilometers per hour is likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Raigad, Palghar, Mumbai, Thane and Ratnagiri till 12 noon, according to the India Meteorological Department's warning issued at 9:00 a.m.

The severe cyclonic storm 'Tauktae' has intensified into a very severe cyclonic storm and is expected to reach the Gujarat coast Monday evening, the India Meteorological Department said.

The IMD has issued an orange alert for Mumbai warning of very heavy rains at isolated places with strong winds on Monday as Tauktae is likely to pass close to the Mumbai coast.
