The death toll in the Pulwama attack on a CRPF convoy has risen to 40. Earlier on Friday, 15 February, India withdrew the 'Most Favoured Nation' status given to Pakistan.
The MEA will also initiate all possible diplomatic steps to ensure that Pakistan is completely isolated from the international community, Union Minister Arun Jaitley said.
Condemning the attack, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the forces behind the terror attack will be punished, warning Pakistan that it is "making a big mistake.” Meanwhile, Congress President Rahul Gandhi extended support to the government in the aftermath of the attack and said that the "entire Opposition stands with the government and the jawans.”
What Exactly Happened
- A CRPF convoy of 78 vehicles, carrying 2,547 CRPF personnel was attacked at 2:03 pm at Awantipora in J&K’s Pulawama District.
- A Mahindra Scorpio carrying more than 350 kg of explosives hit the convoy at Awantipora, 20 km away from Srinagar.
- A CRPF official told The Quint that terrorists opened fire after the blast ripped through the convoy.
- One of the two buses that were badly hit was carrying 39 personnel.
- The injured are being treated at the Army base hospital in Srinagar.
- In an official statement, CRPF confirmed that 37 jawans have been martyred.
- Pakistan based Jaish-e-Mohammed has claimed responsibility for the attack.
- According to NDTV, the stretch of road where the attack occurred was believed to be "safe".
- The jawans were returning from a holiday and were supposed to reach Srinagar before sunset. The convoy started from Jammu around 3 am in the morning.

Police Identifies Terrorist
Police identified the terrorist as Adil Ahmad from Kakapora in Pulwama. He joined the Jaish-Mohammed in 2018.
'Attack Reminiscent of Dark Days of Militancy': Omar Abdullah
Former J&K CM and NC leader Omar Abdullah condemned the attack and said that it was reminiscent of the dark days of militancy pre 2004-05.
Investigation Underway, Says CRPF IG
Zulfiqar Hassan, IG CRPF(Operations) said that the attck is being investigated and the injured have been shifted to the hospital.
“J&K Police has taken up the investigation. The injured shifted to hospital. Post-blast analysis being done at the spot,” he said.
He did not confirm the number of casualties while speaking to the media.
What Exactly Happened?
- There was convoy of 70 buses carrying around 2000 to 2500 personnel.
- One bus got badly hit and the another was partly hit. Each bus was carrying 40-45 personnel.
- CRPF official told The Quint, that prima facie, it seems the bomb was planted in another vehicle which was parked on the highway. The moment blast took place, terrorists opened fired on the convoy.
- CRPF is not confirming the number of casualty as of now.
2500 CRPF Personnel in the Convoy
CRPF DG RR Bhatnagar said that there were at least 2,500 personnel in the convoy.
“Senior officers at the spot, the investigation is underway. Injured being taken care of. There were 2500 personnel in the convoy,” he said.

Forces Responsible for Attack are Frustrated: Governor Satya Pal Malik
In a statement from the J&K Raj Bhavan, Governor Satya Pal Malik observed forces responsible for the insurgency in J&K are desperate and frustrated and just want to prove their presence. He also said that the attack seems to be guided from across border as Jaish-e-Mohammed has claimed responsibility.
Malik urged all the Security Forces Commanders to enhance surveillance on every front and directed the District and Divisional Civil and Police Administration to immediately review the security management of all important installations and establishments.

Arrangements Being Made to Airlift Mortal Remains of Martyrs: MHA
The MHA issued a statement saying arrangements are being made to airlift the mortal remains of martyrs.
"Home Minister Shri Rajnath Singh will be visiting Srinagar tomorrow to take stock of the situation in the wake of the terrorist attack on the CRPF convoy. He will hold review meetings with senior security and police officials to make ground level assessment and review further operational actions.
Meanwhile, MHA is rushing teams of NIA and Forensic experts to carry out investigation into the dastardly attack.

'Crime Against Humanity': Yogi Adityanath Condemns Attack
Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath said that the Pulwama attack was a “crime against humanity and the entire nation should condemn it.”

Jharkhand CM Raghubar Das strongly condemned the Pulwama attack, saying the martyrdom of the jawans would not go waste.

'Stop Supporting Terrorists': India Warns Pakistan
India slammed Pakistan over the Pulwama terror attack, carried out by Jaish-e-Mohammed, and asked the neighbouring country to stop supporting terrorists and dismantle terror infrastructure operating from its soil.
“The Indian government condemns in the strongest possible terms the cowardly terrorist attack on India's brave security forces in Pulwama,” the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.
This heinous and despicable act has been perpetrated by Jaish-e-Mohammed, a Pakistan-based terrorist organisation proscribed by the United Nations and other countries, it said.
This terror group is led by the international terrorist Masood Azhar, who has been given full freedom by the Pakistani government to operate and expand his terror infrastructure in territories under Pakistan's control and to carry out attacks in India and elsewhere with impunity, the MEA said.
The Indian government is firmly and resolutely committed to take all necessary measures to safeguard national security, it said.
"We are equally resolved to fight against the menace of terrorism. We demand that Pakistan stop supporting terrorists and terror groups operating from their territory, and dismantle the infrastructure operated by terrorist outfits to launch attacks in other countries," the statement said.
"We express our sincere condolences to the family members of our fearless security personnel who have made the supreme sacrifice," the MEA said.

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in an official letter to PM Modi, condemned the attack in Pulwama and extended support to India in fighting terrorism.
Outraged & Deeply Grieved: Sonia on CRPF Attacks
UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi said that she was “outraged and deeply grieved” by the attack on the CRPF convoy, which left 40 security personnel dead.
“I’m shocked, outraged and deeply grieved by the barbarous attack on CRPF convoy in J&K. Our brave CRPF personnel died serving the nation selflessly, at the hands of cowardly terrorists, and their sacrifice will not be forgotten,” Sonia Gandhi.
She said that those responsible for this dastardly terror attack “will be brought to justice and made to pay for this appalling act, that goes against every tenet of humanity.”
United Nations Condemns Attack
The United Nations condemned the Pulwama attack, expressing their “deepest condolences.”
“We strongly condemn today's attack in J&K's Pulwama. We express our deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives, to the people and the Government of India. We wish a speedy recovery to injured and call for those behind the attack to be brought to justice,” the UN said, in a statement.
Pak 'Rejects Links' to Pulwama Attack
In a statement, hours after the terrorist attack in Pulwama, Pakistan said that the incident was a matter of “grave concern.”
Pakistan said that it “strongly rejected any insinuation” by the Indian media and government that sought to link the attack to them “without investigation.”
Massive Anti-Pak Protests in Jammu
Massive anti-Pakistan protests rocked Jammu and Kashmir's winter capital on Thursday, in the wake of the Pulwama terror attack.
Demonstrations and candle light marches were held at dozens of places. Braving the rains, people took to the streets in Jewel Chowk, Purani Mandi, Rehari, Janipur, Gandhinagar, Bakshi Nagar, Muthi, Talab Tilloo and Satwari and protested against the killings.
Raising anti-Pakistan, anti-terrorist slogans, the protestors demanded action against Pakistan for "sponsoring terrorism in the Valley." Members of the Bagrang Dal, Shiv Sena and the Dogra Front were seen protesting in large numbers.
J&K High Court Bar Association, Jammu, in an emergent decision suspended work in all the courts in Jammu, including the high Court and the tribunals, in protest of "the dastardly acts of frustrated terrorists" in Pulwama, Kashmir, a Bar spokesman said.

US Denounces Pulwama Attack, Calls on Countries to Deny Safe Haven to Terrorists
The US Friday strongly condemned the terror attack by Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) in Kashmir's Pulwama district and called on all countries to deny safe haven and support for terrorists.
Condemning the terror strike, the US State Department said in a statement that it was “resolutely committed” to working with the Indian government to combat terrorism in all its forms.

Internet Services Suspended in Jammu
Mobile internet services have been suspended in Jammu as a security measure a day after the deadly attack on a CRPF convoy, news agency ANI reported.
A Jaish Video Warned of the Attack Two Days Ago: Sources
The devastating attack on the CRPF convoy that killed 37 personnel came just two days after Jaish-e-Mohammed warned of an attack in a video, an NDTV report said.
The news channel said that Jaish had warned of a terror attack in Kashmir just two days ago, giving away its modus operandi by showing an attack in Afghanistan, in which an explosive-laden vehicle had been used.
NDTV reports that the video, along with input about a possible attack, had been shared with intelligence agencies by the Criminal Investigation Department of the J&K Police. However, no action had been taken about it, the news channel quoted sources as saying.
PM Modi to Chair Cabinet Committee Meeting on Security Today
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security at around 9:15 am on Friday, 15 February. The meeting will be attended by Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, NSA Ajit Doval, and other officials.
The meeting is expected to take a call on the next course of action and India's options — diplomatic or military — in response to the terror attack, The Indian Express reported.

Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik on Friday, 15 February, said that a review meeting with top security official to discuss the lapses in security is on the cards. He also said that the wreath-laying ceremony to honour the martyrs will take place on Friday.
