Assisted Dying Approved by Portuguese Lawmakers in Initial Vote

(Bloomberg) -- Portuguese lawmakers voted in favor of giving terminally ill adults the right to end their lives under medical supervision just two years after a similar vote was rejected.

In an initial vote in parliament, five bills to legalize euthanasia were approved by a majority of votes in the chamber, said Eduardo Ferro Rodrigues, the assembly’s president in comments broadcast by SIC television channel.

The bills will now be discussed in detail by lawmakers before a final vote is held.
