Torres Small Picks Up New Mexico House Seat for Democrats

(Bloomberg) -- Democrat Xochitl Torres Small defeated Republican Yvette Herrell in the open race for New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional District seat, according to projections by the Associated Press.

Torres Small’s victory shifts the state’s sprawling southern district, which spans from the Mexican border to areas just south of Albuquerque, into Democratic hands. Seven-term House Republican Steve Pearce left the seat open to run for governor.
