Three Killed in Guinea as Opposition, Security Forces Clash

(Bloomberg) -- At least three people were killed in clashes between security forces and opposition supporters during a protest march in the Guinean capital, Conakry.

“The three victims killed in clashes include one police officer, who was in the line of duty,” the West African nation’s government said Thursday in an emailed statement.

The violence erupted when opposition supporters marched against the appointment of mayors elected during local elections in February that resulted in a broad victory for the government. The nation with more than a quarter of the world’s bauxite reserves, which is used in making aluminum, experiences intermittent protests by different groups including the opposition and teachers.
