Thailand Unexpectedly Delays Results of First Post-Coup Poll

(Bloomberg) -- Thailand unexpectedly delayed until Monday the announcement of provisional results from the first general election since a military coup in 2014.

The tally, originally expected late Sunday, will instead be released on Monday at 2 p.m., the Election Commission said in Bangkok. Earlier, Chairman Itthiporn Boonprakong had said they would be provided at 10 a.m. tomorrow.

The agency’s Facebook page showed that more than 90 percent of the votes had been counted. Itthiporn said the scheduled briefing tomorrow will provide a tally at 95 percent.

A pro-military party carved out of the ruling junta was in a surprise lead with more than 7 million votes, putting junta leader Prayuth Chan-Ocha in a position to return as prime minister.
