(Bloomberg) -- Sudan’s ruling military council arrested the army chief of staff, General Hashim Ahmed, along with several officers, alleging they were spearheading a coup attempt, the army said in a statement late Wednesday.

The announcement comes as the ruling military council is facing mounting pressure from the opposition to accelerate the handover of power to a civilian administration.

The African nation has been mired in turmoil since the military ousted President Omar al-Bashir earlier this year, following weeks of mass protests against him.
