(Bloomberg) -- Sotheby’s Chief Executive Officer Tad Smith has decided to cancel an appearance at an investment conference in Saudi Arabia after the disappearance of a prominent government critic.

Lauren Gioia, a spokeswoman for the auction house, confirmed the decision Monday.

Smith was going to be part of a panel about culture that also included Mikhail Piotrovsky, director of the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia.
