S. Korea Invited Pope Francis to Meet Kim Jong UN at DMZ

(Bloomberg) -- South Korean president Moon Jae-in’s office has numerously asked Pope Francis to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at the demilitarized zone that separates the two Koreas, Chosun Ilbo reported, citing unidentified people familiar.

  • Moon’s office had invited Pope Francis to visit the Korean peninsula after finishing his trip to Japan on Nov. 26
  • A government official delivered an invitation in July through Archbishop Alfred Xuereb, the Apostolic Nuncio to South Korean and Mongolia
    • Another request was made after last year’s Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity during Moon’s visit to Vatican City
  • Moon’s office has not received a confirmed response back
