(Bloomberg) -- Daimler AG, the parent company for Mercedes-Benz, plans to recall about 745,000 of its vehicles in the U.S. because of concerns about faulty sunroofs.
Mercedes-Benz vehicles from its C-, CLK-, CLS- and E-Class lines sold between 2001 and 2011 will be recalled because the bonding between the glass panel and the sliding roof frame may deteriorate and cause a detachment, according to a release from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. A detached glass panel can separate from the vehicle and become a road hazard increasing the risk of a crash, the agency said.
Mercedes-Benz USA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the glass panel bonding and replace the sliding roof if necessary. The carmaker didn’t give a figure for the total of worldwide recalls or estimate the cost of compensating customers, the Financial Times reported. The recall is expected to begin Feb. 14.
In December, Mercedes-Benz agreed to pay as much as $20 million in penalties for violations on how it operated its vehicle recall program. The U.S. arm must pay $13 million immediately while the remainder is deferred in case there are additional violations, according to the federal agency overseeing vehicle safety.
