May Blocked 2016 Probe in Brexit-Backer Arron Banks, Mail Says

(Bloomberg) -- Prime Minister Theresa May blocked an intelligence investigation into Arron Banks, one of the main backers of pro-Brexit campaigns, when she was Home Secretary, according to the Daily Mail.

  • Mail says May rejected an investigation in early 2016 -- before the Brexit referendum -- as it was too politically explosive
  • Donations to Banks’ Leave.EU group were referred to police on Thursday by the Electoral Commission
  • Banks says police investigation will clear him
  • May’s spokeswoman tells reporters the government "would never confirm or deny any conversations with the security service in any aspect."
