EU Seen Shifting Gear on Sweeping Climate Reforms Next Year

European Union negotiations regarding an unprecedented climate-policy overhaul are set to gather pace next year as France takes over the rotating presidency of the bloc, according to a senior EU official.

“We’ll have to change gear,” said Mauro Petriccione, director general for climate at the European Commission, at an online event. “We know for a fact the French presidency is extremely committed. They do have a rather good track record on getting things done on climate change.”

The EU’s executive branch in July proposed more than a dozen draft laws to implement a tougher 2030 target to cut emissions by at least 55% from 1990 levels. They will affect all sectors of the economy, from energy to transport, and will require support from member states and the European Parliament to enter into force.

Talks about the so-called Fit for 55 proposal are now at a stage where the Commission explains to national governments and the EU Parliament all the details and linkages between several draft regulations in the package, according to Petriccione.

“We’re getting to the phase where everybody understands why we have made all the proposals and how they link with each other,’ he said.
