(Bloomberg) -- Algeria’s interim president Abdelkader Bensalah said he will establish a national authority to prepare for elections, adding that a new president will be elected "in a period that cannot exceed 90 days."

Bensalah spoke in a televised address hours after parliament named the head of the upper house as interim leader. His appointment follows the resignation of president Abdel Aziz Bouteflika in the wake of mass protests against his rule.
