Seized Red Cross Midwife Killed in Northeast Nigeria, ICRC Says

(Bloomberg) -- The International Committee of the Red Cross said one of its midwives held captive by suspected Islamist militants since a March 1 attack is dead.

Two other ICRC workers, a midwife and a nurse, remain missing since the attack on the town of Rann, the Geneva-based aid organization said Monday in an emailed statement, without saying who or what was responsible for her death. The three women were abducted after the gunmen attacked a military facility, killing 11 people.

Boko Haram Islamist militants have waged a violent campaign in Nigeria’s northeast since 2009 to impose its version of Islamic law on Africa’s most populous country of almost 200 million people.
