‘Hidden Figures’ Topples ‘Rogue One’ in Final Box Office

(Bloomberg) -- Walt Disney Co.’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” was toppled from its three-week run as box-office leader by “Hidden Figures,” the 20th Century Fox film about a group of black women mathematicians who play a crucial role in the U.S. space program in the 1960s.

“Hidden Figures,” featuring Taraji P. Henson and Octavia Spencer, collected $22.8 million in weekend sales at North American theaters, ComScore Inc. said Monday in a revised report on Friday-to-Sunday box office revenue. “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” came in second place with $22.1 million, ending its run atop the box office.

“Hidden Figures” garnered two Golden Globe nominations, one for Octavia Spencer in her supporting role and another for its music. The film focuses on three women at NASA whose scientific contributions help successfully launch John Glenn into orbit, a key moment in the 1960s space race.

The movie has garnered 93 percent positive reviews, according to aggregator Rottentomatoes. It cost $25 million to make, not including marketing outlays, according to Box Office Mojo, and beat forecasts for the weekend, topping the $21 million estimate at BoxOfficePro.com.

“Rogue One” remains a runaway domestic and global hit for Disney, with $477.4 million in North American sales alone. Its worldwide total is $914.4 million, according to the studio. “Hidden Figures,” which opened in limited release and recently expanded to more theaters, has pulled in $25.8 million in three weeks.

“Rogue One,” the second “Star Wars” movie from Disney since it acquired the Lucasfilm brand, fell short of last year’s “The Force Awakens.” As a standalone prequel, rather than one of the “Star Wars” episodes, it hadn’t been expected to generate as much fervor among moviegoers.

In its preliminary report Sunday, ComScore put “Rogue One” at $22 million and “Hidden Figures” at $21.8 million.
