11th Weekly Gain For Sensex; Tata Motors’ Best Week On Record

Closing Bell

Indian equities managed to eke out gains for the week despite shedding over 1% on the final trading session.

The S&P BSE Sensex ended 1.1% lower but managed to close above the mark of 49,000 at 49,034. The NSE Nifty 50 index too fell 1.1% to end at 14,433. 42 out of the 50 Nifty constituents ended with losses.

Both the benchmarks ended with weekly gains of over 0.5%.

All sectoral indices ended with losses in today's session. The Nifty I.T. index was the top laggard, ending over 2.2% lower. The PSU Bank index too fell over 2% in today's session.

The Pharma index declined 1.6% while the Nifty Bank, Nifty Media and Nifty Metal declined between 0.8% and 1.2% respectively.

Broader markets too fell in tandem with the benchmark indices in today's session. The midcap index fell 1.1% while the Smallcap index declined by a similar quantum.

1,345 stocks on the NSE ended with losses while 547 managed to buck the trend and post gains.

Opening Bell

Indian equities have opened little changed on the final trading day of the week, as sentiment across the globe remains subdued.

The S&P BSE Sensex opened 72 points higher at 49,656 while the NSE Nifty 50 index was unchanged at the start of trade at 14,594.

As of closing on Thursday, the Sensex was poised for its 11th straight weekly advance, maintaining its longest run since 2009.

Almost all sectoral indices have had a subdued start to the trading day. The Metal index, which was the top laggard on Thursday has opened 0.4% higher while the remainder of the indices are little changed.

Broader markets have opened with gains in today's session. The midcap index is up 0.2% while the Smallcap index has gained 0.4% in the early minutes of trade.

Final Trading Day Of The Week

Good Morning!

Indian equities ended flat for the second straight day. The S&P BSE Sensex remained around 400 points adrift of the 50,000 mark. The NSE Nifty 50 also remained range-bound over the last two sessions.

And as the benchmarks are stepping into the final trading day of the week, futures are indicating a weak start. The Singapore-traded SGX Nifty, an early indicator of the Nifty 50 Index’s performance in India, fell 0.5% to 14,555 as of 7:40 a.m. on Friday.

The Sensex is set for its 11th straight weekly gain — the longest since June 2009 when the rally continued for 14 weeks in a row.

HCL Technologies Ltd. will report its quarterly results pre-market open. Non-Nifty 50 stocks like PVR, Shoppers Stop, Hathway Cable will also announce results today. SAIL's retail OFS opens for subscription today.

Asian equities are declining this morning after Joe Biden's Covid-19 relief plan. Stocks in Japan, Australia and South Korea are declining.

Futures on the Dow Jones are trading 70 points lower. The index posted modest losses on Thursday.

West Texas Intermediate crude climbed 0.3% to $53.72 per barrel, while gold rose by a similar quantum to $1,852.7/Oz.
